Three’s A Pattern is a blog about sports and the data behind it.   Typically, we’ll be tackling so called “truths” in sports to see if the mystique matches reality.  What’s a “truth”? It’s something that gets said so much that people take is as being true, without ever challenging if it is.  We’re not going to be speculating, predicting or otherwise trying to push our own agenda. We’re simply going to see what story the data tells.  Along the way, we’ll also be throwing out smaller, bit sized chunks of information as we come across them.  Not necessarily “truth’, but fun facts none-the-less.

Our Creed:

  • Even though this is a statistical blog, for the most part, we’re staying away from advanced statistics.  You won’t see words like parametric, regression and ANOVA here.  At most, we’ll talk about means, averages and medians.
  • All articles will be supported by data, graphs and visualizations.
  • We’re fully prepared to prove things right.  If we start out trying to disprove some question or assumption and the data actually backs it up, that’s ok in our book.
  • We moderate all comments before publishing them.  However, the only comments that will be deleted are vulgar and disrespectful ones.  We realize this is counter to a lot of other blogs out there and that’s ok by us.  Disagreement and opinions are welcome.  You can see an example of our tolerance in the comments for our first post on USC.  We’re trying to promote a level of discussion here, not be bogged down useless trolls.  So, this is our way of being proactive.  Think of it as the Broken Window Theory for comments
  • We welcome all feedback.  If you have a topic you’d like to see covered, please contact us.

That’s it.  Enjoy the blog and we hope you find it useful,

Griffin
